So this morning I'm having my Sunday morning ritual - the Sunday paper and a cup of tea. The first article I get to is a AP story "Why They Hate Hilary". Before reading that story, I had no idea that I and the rest of the US had traveled back in time...I thought we were all in the 21st century. Here's what I read:
Her husband, Daniel, 50, also a Democrat, agreed: "I think women should stay home instead of being boss."
I truly hope that I'm not the only one that is concerned with those words.....Since when do men have more "authority"? And did that couple miss all the women in the workforce, not to mention the many countries that have either had a female leader or currently have one? What happened to evaluating a candidate based on their abilities and not their sex? The sad part is that this happens all the time, not just to female presidential candidates - it can happen when you just want to get a management position or start a busines. Its like if you have a vagina, then you're only qualified for certain things, and that certainly isn't the case. Maybe I'm a bit more sensitive to the subject, because I am in a male-dominated field, and I would like to think that my sex (and race) aren't working "against" me.
Overall it saddens me that there are people in the world who feel that you have to subscribe to traditional gender roles. Its one thing to believe in them for yourself and live your own life that way, but to assume that everyone else should abide by them takes it too far. Ideas of "women's work" and "men's work" and who's better at what just sucks in general.
I hope us Americans make it back to the 21st century soon....being backwards and country really sucks.
