Hi friends!

Welcome to my little corner of Al Gore’s Internet. I’m Jareesa - I’m a scientist, a freelance writer, a knitter, wife to LM, mom to #BabyPi, and more. I love Queen Bey, squishy yarn, watching GBBO, and attempting to bake. Sometimes I rant, sometimes I rave, but I always tell the truth.

The Proposal Story

As I promised in the last post, here's the story of how LM proposed to me. Backstory - LM and I met on Twitter in 2012; he responded to one of my tweets. Our twitter conversations led to DMs (private messages) which lead to Gchat conversations, then texting and finally phone calls. We met in person June 2013 at the DMV Cookout, and we had an opportunity to hang out and really get to know each other in person. He also wrote me a super cute note asking if we could date, which I still have. After that meeting in June, we started dating long distance, with him in DC and me in Minneapolis. The long distance part of our relationship ended two weeks ago, when he and I did a 1200 mile road trip to move him to Minneapolis.

The Monday after the big move, I went to work feeling not the greatest. By mid-morning, I was weak and really needed to lay down. My boss was occupied so I slipped out and went home, where LM was working. He immediately diagnosed me with a fever and put me in bed, bringing me soup and my laptop. By the next morning I felt much better, and so I headed off to work. Normally I take the bus, since I work downtown and parking is expensive, but LM told me to drive. I figured he wanted me to meet him somewhere after work.

Halfway through my work day I got a text from him with a clue and a time to be there. Immediately my eyebrow went up - what is he doing? I didn't have a lot of time to over think it because I had a busy day, which was probably a good thing. The clue was for a sushi restaurant, which is where we went on our first Minneapolis date and where he asked me to be his girlfriend. I was expecting him to meet me there, but he wasn't there, so I grabbed a seat outside and ordered a drink. About 10 minutes later, I see my friend EP strolling in - what's she doing here? She says she was supposed to meet some folks but they weren't there, so she grabbed a seat with me. I hadn't seen her in a while, so we got a chance to catch up. After about 10 minutes, she says that she's my next clue in this scavenger hunt and directs me to my next location. Now I'm starting to get excited, cause this wasn't just LM being cute, he was really planning something big.

I thanked EP, took care of my bill, and headed to my next destination, which was a restaurant downtown where we celebrated Valentine's Day. I walked in and headed to the bar, and there was my dear friend DN! And she even had a delicious raspberry martini waiting for me! By this time I'm super excited but I'm also starting to get nervous...I mean this is getting real! I enjoyed a drink with DN, and then she gave me my last clue. The last destination was Loring Park, which is this gorgeous park near downtown Minneapolis. I arrived and saw LM's truck, and he met me near my car.

We walked through the park and made small talk for a bit. I didn't want to be too excited or anxious because I knew he had something planned and I didn't want to interrupt. We walked through the park and ended up walking on the dock in the park lake. We sat and talked some more, and I was trying to keep the conversation light so that I wouldn't freak out and be all girly.

Random conversation on the dock

We were talking for a while, and I was doing random stuff like showing him things on my phone, like a townhouse for rent.

Yup, killing time by looking at my phone.

LM decided he'd had enough stalling, and that's when he pulled a ring box out of his pocket, and got down on one knee. All I remember thinking is "OMG I can't believe this is really happening!" I was grinning from ear to ear when he asked me to marry him. First I asked him if he was serious, and then I said yes! He grabbed my right hand to put the ring on it, and I whispered to him that it was the wrong hand, LOL. He grabbed my left hand instead and put a gorgeous ring on it - the exact one I fell in love with when we went ring shopping. He stood up and we hugged and kissed.

See that smile? I was ecstatic during the actual proposal

I said yes!

And then...LM told me to turn around and wave...turns out my friends were in the park too! They were hiding behind trees and documented the entire proposal! I couldn't believe it. Later I learned that he coordinated with them to be a part of the proposal, which was super sweet. My entire crew was also in Loring Park, and were there to congratulate us. After all the hugs and whatnot, we walked across the park and had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

Finding out my friends were watching was a sweet surprise

And that is how I got engaged to the love of my life, LM. He and I had discussed getting engaged at length, and I knew he would ask after the move, but i had no idea it would be so soon! I really love that he involved my good friends, and that he made it so personal for us. I'm so excited to be marrying LM and embarking on this next phase of our lives together.
